Peach Fanchonettes

Peach Fanchonettes

These are a scrumptious take on the classic peach pie, yet more fresh and uncomplicated tasting.  I had never heard of a Fanchonette (which I’ve now learned is classically a tarte-sized pie, traditionally with a layer of jam, topped with a custard) until I noticed a...

Mt. Hood

Mt. Hood

Colin, our younger boys and I visited Mt. Hood last week. It's the first time I'd been back since I was a little girl, living on the mountain in our family gypsy wagon. What started as a plan to live there for a few weeks, as a part of a commune, turned into a long...

No Garnets, No Glory

No Garnets, No Glory

Last week, we awoke to a rare cool and drizzly summer day.  We'd been itching to visit Garnet Creek, about two and a half hours away in our neighboring state of Idaho.  It's the only place besides India where you can find Star Garnets.  So Bongo, Lukie and I decided...

IT'S ME, SERENA!

In 2002, I was dreaming of creating a fun and happy little event to sell my vintage and handmade goods. In 2002, I held my first event in my neighbor's barn along with a handful of friends. The sale became wildly popular and began attracting visitors from across the country and recognition in national magazines. Today The Farm Chicks Vintage & Handmade Fair fills the Spokane County Fairgrounds and features hundreds of creatively and carefully curated spaces packed with vintage and handmade goods. Many describe it as a bucket list event, magical, inspirational, and the best event of its kind in the USA. I describe it as the best weekend of the year!
