BUILDING MEMORIES
Homebuilder Rick McQuesten likes to think that he "restores" houses
more than he "remodels" them. In the spring of 2001, Rick founded Makamah
Beach, LLC, a construction company specializing in home renovation and began
rescuing beautiful old homes in his hometown of Spokane, Washington.
His goal is to stay with the character of each home as much as possible, yet
add modern amenities and conveniences that make it a comfortable and easy house
to live in. Kitchens and bathrooms are updated in terms of electrical, plumbing,
and venting.
In some of the houses he restores, he may find lathe and plaster walls with
stress cracks caused by settling of the house and its foundation. If the cracks
are not of structural concern, he occasionally leaves them, as he likes the character
they add to the home.
I believe that a hundred year old house shouldn't look like it was just
built yesterday, but should show some signs of age. Every house has a story,
and sometimes, masking the imperfections is like hiding the story, says Rick.
I have worked on many styles of houses, including Craftsman, Victorians,
Colonials, Bungalows, and old farm houses. I enjoy them all and always look forward
to the unique challenges each will bring. Every house has a certain "vibe",
and I try to go with the feeling I get from the house while working on it. While
some houses have had a relaxing, easy-going vibe, others have been more energetic
and lively. Some have been happy and some sad. But every time Ive finished
a house, there is a feeling of satisfaction and gratitude. Although Im
always happy to be finished with a project, I also think of my work in terms
of what I have done. There isn't a single house that I think back on without
fond memories.
